First phase: preparation and study
The craftsman, to give stiffness and a form to the object, he used a plastic core; specifically, he adopted, as a base, a PVC pipe with the same dimensions of the future bearer in hide. To cover the PVC pipe, he used vegetable shoulder with a thickness of about 2,2 mm natural and coloured. The hide sheet , with a rectangular form, it has been cut on both sides, one centimetres less, than the usual diameter, to permit the hide to stick perfectly to the plastic base. On the natural hide sheet, are stitched by machine, two hide strips cognac colour: one at the extreme bottom and the other on the top part of the sheet. The two hide strips: are coloured shoulders with a thickness of about 2,2 mm. The function of these two strips is dual: on one side it gives support to the accessories that will be applied and on the other side it creates a colour game, that enriches esthetically the object.
Second phase: mounting accessories
This phase is dedicated to the accessories and to the final touch. This operation, obviously, must be done before the final stitching of the hide or else, once sewed and set, it will not allow new mountings. To attach the mobile parts like the lid and the shoulder belt, you must attach all the accessories.
In our case, the accessories used, are:
- 2 buckles gold colour, which support the straps in hide that allow to open and close the lid;
- 2 half moons, gold colour, attached to the hide with rivets the same colour;
- 2 hanks old gold colour, that hook to the half moons to attach the shoulder belt;
- rivets used to attach the half moons to the hide and used as decorative accessories
Third phase: stitching
Along the two borders of the hide sheet with the hand punch are made holes same distance between them, where you can pass the thread through. The distance between one hole to another is of 2 cm, while the perimeter along which the slits are formed have a height of 1 cm on both sides. You adapt this technique, to allow the hide sheet to distend completely when it is stitched around the tube, avoiding folds and wrinkles. This way it will appear all one ,so the object will result homogeneous and compact. Furthermore, when the two ends of the sheet will match, you will have a perfectly symmetrical seam since the distance between the holes is equal. In the opposite side to the seam, the central strip of the hide sheet wide 10 cm will be glued to the tube, to give more stability, but above all it allows the hand stitching to be even and straight.
The stitching is hand made from high-tenacity waxed thread with 1 mm thickness, on the play of colours created earlier alternating two hide tones, it was used a natural colour thread, on the cognac colour parts, and a brown colour on the natural hide.
Fourth phase: the lid and the shoulder belt
The bearer is also provided with movable parts, like the lid and of unhooking parts like the shoulder belt. Both are made in part and assemble together in the final phase. The lid is the final part of the work, while the shoulder belt is an ulterior accessory that enriches the bearer.
For making the lid, the craftsman used a guide compass, he made a circle out of natural colour hide, the same diameter as the tube; with the hand punch he made holes along the circumference of the circle in hide. To give thickness and to allow to stick perfectly to the hide tube, the circle is sewed by brown colour waxed thread to a hide strip cognac colour.
The lid it opens and closes, thanks to the hide straps mounted with the buckle; even here he wanted to give vitality and movement: the rivets old gold colour, applied along the board of the lid, enriches the craftwork and are similar to the other accessories applied to the whole object. The shoulder belt, cognac colour, with two hanks at the ends are detachable and adjustable.
